How can we prevent the emergence of new slums in our cities in the future?

Should slum dwellers be given property rights? If so, what should be the nature of such property rights? Should the property right be vested in individual or in a cooperative formed by slum dwellers or a self help group of slum dwellers?

Slum dwellers should not be given property rights. What could happen, however, is that the slums could be fully demolished and rebuilt as townships with ownership being retained by the Government.

Any transfer of property rights enables the sale of land and thereby invites the control of musclemen or political groups to manipulate things. Irrespective of whether its being transfered to individuals or to SHGs/Cooperatives.

As mentioned by mon friend above...!!

The slum dwellers must be given hygienic and safe accommodations.
We are a robust developing economy and a major reform must happen in this field of poverty annihilation and infrastructure development.

Mumbai, this is the new York of India, but it stinks...!!

How can this be the reality???

We must change the current lot of slums into townships with property controlled by the Government and all the dwellers must be given a Unique Identification Number like the rest citizens.

They must not be given very high sanctions, but must be encouraged morally to work and earn their livelihood....!!
They live in a Urbanized area and they must accommodate themselves accordingly....!!
