Managing Urbanization

Most of our metros and cities are under severe stress with inadequate social and physical infrastructure coupled with worsening pollution. Migration pressures are likely to increase. How do we make our cities more liveable? What can we do today to ensure that smaller cities and towns are not similarly overwhelmed tomorrow?

Here are some simple enough steps which followed judiciously should remove and stops slums from growing

1. POLITICAL Intervention - There has to be a full stop to this without which nothing will happen and we all know that very well. Political parties should not have the right to interfere in the city Admin coz under their protection such things grow.

2. Remove Political Parties from Municipalities - Yes politicians are the cancer due to which cities are facing these problems. All Municipalities / Corporations should not have any elected political body because they allow for the mushrooming of Slums

3. Focus on other cities - Currently the GOI is focussing too much on a few cities due to which they are growing and acts like a magnet attracting migrants. Make every capital of every state a major metro so that those state guys only go there. Also create 3-4 more Smaller metros in that state so that these smaller cities can ease the load.

4. Affordable housing - Create affordable, clean and good housing so that they can stay there on rent. Do not offer anything for free, because everything is for free everyone from every village starts coming there.

5. No FREEBIES - Do not offer any more sops to villagers/migrants to any city, this I know is not good but we dont have options right now. This will deter the migrants from coming into that city thus Slums would be less.

6. ILLEGAL IMMIGRATION - Remove all illegal immigrants which are sheltered by POLITICIANS. With their removal the load will some what ease.

7. DEMOLISH SLUMS - though this is very harsh but this is the fact that has to happen, demolish the slums and build cheaper homes for them to stay there. With vertical growth lot of land would get free which should then be converted into green land for clean Oxygen.

Slums..!!

This cannot be found in a country like India...!!

Of course, a developing country faces such stinks, but it has to be cleaned up at any cost...!!

In order to avoid the development of new slums in the growing and already developed cities, certain effective measures have to be taken...!!

I am from Coimbatore, and here so far the slums are small but still its there..
The State Govt must have acted quick as soon as they knew Coimbatore is a growing City...!!
[*]The empty spaces of land, specially near rivers (which are nothing but sewers), and lakes must be protected and must be converted to reserved area or must be transformed to beautiful parks which add beauty to cities like Coimbatore, Mumbai, Chennai and several other cities in India.
[*]These areas must be fenced or blocked with gates.
[*]Currently existing Slums, can be converted to Townships with apartments given for low cost to the Dwellers, but under the State or Central Govt. control only....!!

With the lifestyle we are living i,e we need servants for our daily house work and drivers even for our comfortable car, we definitely need space for people who are actually drivers and servants in our society. So while creating sectors in new cities, a separate sector can be kept with multi-stories specially made for people belonging to that category.
There should be proper transport facility for the servants to reach out to their respective "maaliks".
They themselve should be held responsible for maintaining the cleanliness and should be fined accordingly for breaking the rules.

We can't ignore the people who belong to that part of the society.

Basis reason of slums in cities is unemployment which cause migration from various stats, I feel that if employment is created in stats will stop migration and that will automatically stop developing slums in metro cities.
After that government should take strict action against people who makes slums.

We should focus on creating more model cities instead of burdening existing infrastrucutre of metros to handle migration of people from rural areas to cities.

Creating opportunity and business in rural area will also help.

provide better healthcare , education and vocational skills to people migrating from rural to urban area for jobs.

Right to Food is a must for every Indian to prevent starvation in urban india which sometime goes unreported.

I feel it is very difficult to prevent slums emergence as people migrating to cities for menial work do not have any place to stay and hence they take shelter in such places that are isolated from main cities and do not have any basic facilities. We cannot wish away migration to the cities from rural areas or other cities. Hence the emergence of slums can be addressed if there are state provisions for the stay (such as shelters etc. spread over the city which can be run by NGOs/ individuals/CSR with or without the help of the government funds) of the migrant populations in the cities where they can reside till the time they are in the city as these are seasonal migrants. For the permanent migrants there is need to have housing pockets in the city plans itself so that they are spread over the urban area. Seema

I do not see any focused strategy for population control.I am disappointed to see that it is not part of the 12 point strategy. While the govt is talking about small families, where is the effort to reduce the overall population of the country itself?.Advice id for others only
Huge resources are spent on basic needs of the downtrodden, which is growing in number. Hence development efforts take the back seat.
With 2.5% of land,we have 18% of world population. No plan can set any good initiative, without any urgent attention to this.
Huge portion of tax money is spent without any visible improvement. Apparently no metrics is seen for any strategy. As per UNICEF and Supreme Court, over 1.1 million children(over 90% of them girls) are orphaned. What is the efforts towards this?
The planning commission must address this.
To me Population,Pollution,Energy security and Corruption are key issues. While the quality of life at home is improving for many, quality of public life is go down steeply.
There is no initiative for preventive action.

1) Strict enforcement of law, no water/electricity connection to such slums. If already done illegally, exemplary punitive action by Local Police Station

2) Monthly report by SHO/Local Police station w.r.t appearance of slum in their jurisdiction and steps taken by them for removal of slum

3) Quarterly review by SP and DM of district. Any slum remaining unremoved should be arranged to be removed within three months with suitable police/administrative/judicial arrangements

4) Six monthly review by DGP and Chief Secretary of the state. Any slum remaining unremoved should be arranged to be removed within six months with suitable police/administrative/judicial arrangements.

5) Already existing slums should be relocated within one year from the date of appearance in official records. If no such record exits, comprehensive survey should be done by local body within 6 month of notification of 12th plan.
