Should the Railways be corporatized and private participation increased? If so, how?
by suryakant.iitm@gmail.com » Fri Feb 04, 2011 1:15 pm
No, Although there is urgent need to improve the rail infrastructure privatization is not the solution. Government is running away from responsibility. Though controlled private participation is okay, but we should always keep in mind that it is need of more than 2 crore people on daily basis and should not be run by a mere profit incentive.

Privatsation should be encouraged in all govt run enterprises as that will improve service level and the most importantly the corruption. Let's see what are the areas which are of great concern. Food in trains should be private provider cleaning trains and keeping platforms tidy should be privatize now the core of all the issue is freight movement should be privatize to be auctioned and rates to be fixed by govt so business does not suffer as private player can hike freight moving cost to make huge profits and common person can suffer. Let's start with 3 key areas and once successful then other areas can be opened to privatization.

Corporates may be allowed to manage the ticketing and hospitality inside one or two coaches of a train. This may be done for high end trains to improve passenger experience and to provide more choice to consumers. Same train may have 2/3 coaches being managed by different companies (ensuring competition). May be done for high end trains such as Rajdhanis and Shatabdis.
Will ensure efficient usage of money leading to increased profit, which may be utilized to ensure better services in subsidized sleeper classes and better infrastructure.

Every change has to face critisism like when night banking was introduced in public banks , employees didnt accept it instantly but change is another name of life and now change is compulsory We can give 49% shares to private sector and remaining 51% will remain with govt. COACH MANUFACTURING RAILWAY INFRASTRUCTURE CUSTOMER SERVICES CATTERING should be handed over to private sector...and administrative work should accomplish by govt.

To reduce the demand for crude oil, Govt must provide free public transportation.

Privatization is nowhere a solution to the problem. why cant the government handle the resources as efficiently as the private sector does.. excessive decentralization, though being an asset of the country, has somewhere paved the way for the corruption process. time doesn't demand privatization, it rather demands accountability and a more responsive behavior on the part of the government..

I think railways should not be privatized. if privatization happens then it will bring profit motive into it and it will take railways away from service motive. Since railways are the most popular , convenient, easy , cheap and widely used transport system by all people in the country; greater amount of inputs are required from state to enhance the operations of the railways. Inputs can be funds, infrastructure, technological, skill, managerial in nature. These inputs can be utilized for up-gradation of existing system, initiating new projects, bringing in new technology in operation, etc.

There is no need to privatize Indian railways. Only thing is that Regular Audits should be conducted regarding the functioning of railways. Feedback system should be introduced so that passengers can easily give their feedback & suggestions.
